Infos

During my internship, I had the opportunity to help drive the design of the Magnetic Boom Light. I worked to develop the form as it is today, exploring different surfacing options on the head, arms, and base to make the product cohesive with the Milwaukee design language. As a team, we also explored the user experience of the product, looking at the foldability and mechanisms for the user to easily remove the magnetic base.

The Call

For diesel mechanics, electricians, and HVAC technicians, working while holding a light simultaneously is a fundamental daily frustration. Through in-field research, Milwaukee Tool discovered users needed a task light that can position itself precisely, stays stable under vibration and movement, and adjust without requiring both hands. Milwaukee set out to design a light so that tradespeople working in confined, overhead, or awkward-angle environments could achieve hands-free, targeted illumination without sacrificing mobility, battery runtime, or structural rigidity.

The Challenges

Balancing the magnet force, arm adjustability and stability, and providing insight to the users on how to fold and store the product were all challenges the team faced. Through brainstorming and collaboration, the design and engineering team worked through challenges and pressure tested the concept with users in the field to explore possible frustrations and eliminate them before production, improving the viability of the product.

The Impact

The M18 Boom Light reduces on-site lighting setup time and repositioning interruptions, directly improving productivity and reducing injury risk to tradespeople in low-visibility work conditions. The versatility of the product empowers users to take on tasks with confidence.
