A unique task light, built for a unique user.

The Magnetic Boom Light was designed to improve task visibility for heavy-duty diesel mechanics. Due to unique work enviroments, these users demand more mobility, versatilty, and durability than what many existing lighting solutions on the market could provide. The team at Milwaukee Tool talked with users to understand the needs and frustrations of these users and develop their product to help meet those needs.

Big magnets, big challenges.

One of the key features of the Boom Light is its stong magnetic base. Many hours of research and development went into figuring out the proper balance betwen magnet strength to steel, and the users ability to remove the product from a surface. The solution we developed was a lever arm that shears the magnet from its steel mating surface, weakening the force required by the user to remove the product.

Eight points of rotation.

The rotating arm design of the Boom Light was a challenge for both ID and ME teams. The product needed to maintain an extended horizonal position which required the hinges to be very stiff. This conflicted with the users ability to fold and store the product. The ID team thought alot about the discoverability of the folding orientation of the product in order to achieve its most compact form. We created a visual form language on each section of the arms to create a cohesive design when folded.
